Q&A: What is the best free way to scan for viruses, spyware, adware etc. (besides adaware)?

Question by e: What is the best free way to scan for viruses, spyware, adware etc. (besides adaware)?
My Adaware stopped working, I must have something that is preventing it from working and I’d like to get rid of it. My computer worked for a good 4 months with this problem but now my internet explorer is acting funky and wont work (gotta use a different computer) and things are freezing a whole lot more.

So whats the best FREE program?

  1. Dave Computer Cleaner says:

Do a quick scan with Malwarebytes its very effective and free, you may have to download it to a USB memory stick from another computer and transfer it to the infected one if you are unable to get on the internet.

If Malwarebytes doesn’t remove the infection try Hitman Pro it scans with five different anti-virus engines at once and often works when others are blocked, simply activate the 30 day free trial then once you PC has been cleaned remove it.

Please email me and let me know if it worked, thanks :)

    The best FREE program?

    Get this:

    1. Panda
    2. Avira (turn off real-time protection)
    3. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

malwarebytes is not an anti-virus program
Get an anti-virus with real-time or rootkit protection like
    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials
and you can do malwarebytes for the rest but you do not run both at the same time

There is no such thing as the best program for this. New viruses, spyware, adware are written every day. The new ones need to be identified and dealt with and each one has its own staff working on the problems.

My guess is that your antivirus program won’t get this. A lot of malware that causes this kind of trouble now isn’t caught by antivirus.

Dave has the best advice, assuming it’s malware and not just malfunction of your Ad-aware. Malwarebytes followed by Hitman if Malwarebytes doesn’t get it for you.

Don’t install Panda antivirus and Avira; you should only have one antivirus installed on your computer at any time.

If there doesn’t seem to be any malware on your computer, try a repair install. Failing that, uninstall and then reinstall Ad-aware and it may resolve the issue. If it doesn’t, uninstall again and this time, clean your registry with Ccleaner and install again.

    1. Download and set installing. Decide if you want the Yahoo toolbar when offered during installation.
    2. Start Ccleaner and click the Registry button.
    3. Ask it to scan for issues.
    4. When the scan finishes, ask it to fix the selected issues. (Make sure all are selected; right-click on any and it offers a choice of selecting all.) It will offer to back up. Accept, and also accept the suggested name; it uses date and time to make it easy to search backups in the unlikely event you ever need it.
    5. Once backed up, tell it to fix.
    6. Repeat this from 3 until no more issues are found.
    7. Reinstall Ad-aware.

Another good source of info if you have malware and useful info for looking it up is Bleeping Computer’s removal guides for specific malwares and their uninstall lists:
