virus: infects your computer and makes it useless
antivirus: removes the virus
spyware: collects information on what you do and sends it to an unauthorized third party. also bad because it eats up resources making your system slow and may result in popups so that you can’t do anything productive on your computer
antispyware: detects and removes the spyware

If its already controlling what you can and cannot download your better off reformatting but any ways, Defender sucks, go with lavasoft or spybot and in the future use Mozilla Firefox (preferably with the adblock plus extension) rather then Internet Explorer, its much less vulnerable because its updated more regularly and isnt tied into the operating system as IE is.
